On last Sunday, when I was watching Cricket match between India and Australia, where Australia seemed to be cruising to the victory, I thought just to drop by over the clash between South Africa Vs West Indies. It scared the hell out of me when I saw the score of A B De Villiers: 28 balls 88 runs. The time when I was just recalling the record for the fastest century by Correy Anderson (Not anymore), he smashed a four to make matters worse for Correy. To make Sunday more auspicious, I thought to switch over to this exciting match and to get updates on his score ball by ball when I realized that the game between India and Australia was just a formality.
And then the time came when this very cricketer registered a record on his name for the fastest century by any batsman in a one-day International cricket match by just taking meagre 31 balls to score a hundred. We all know what A B De Villiers is capable of and how devastating he can be on his day, but still to score a hundred in just 31 balls! It really takes something, something well personified by the maestro A B De Villiers in the match.
If you pay close attention to his career statistics, I mean it says everything. You just name it. Whether It is Test Cricket, One day International or T20. It is really astounding to see the same class batsman scoring 33 runs in 221 balls in a Test match is able to score 100 runs in just 31 balls causing worries every time in the opposition camp .
Though we have known South Africa for being “Chokers” where they find themselves hapless every time of not winning any major tournaments; but still we can’t give a false credit well deserved by De Villiers to some random batsman. Also, It’s not just his batting that amuses us; the way he does his fielding on the ground, even crossing the barrier of age 30+; he still takes 1 or 2 spectacular catches now and then which truly embarrasses today’s youngsters where they show kind of lackadaisical attitude while doing fielding. For the matter of fact, by far, there is no cricketer on this planet who is as committed as De Villiers is. I mean, on the departure of Mark Boucher (Former Wicket Keeper for S.A.) when S.A. was just searching for his apt replacement, De Villiers took the onus on his shoulder showing his fidelity and loyalty for the team.
It was truly overwhelming to see Chris Gayle bowing down and praising the thunderstorm blown by De Villiers juxtaposed with the great applause from the crowd. No matter how jinxed S. A. was now and then; they are truly blessed with one of the maestros of forever. And yes…, there is no doubt that he is the batsman who truly deserves for claiming the record for the fastest hundred scored by any batsman by all means.
Note: The multi-talented guy we are talking about has not restrained himself to Cricket only; he has shown his true skills in many sports and academics as well, one just needs to pay an honest visit to Wikipedia and Cricinfo.
